Casting for Recovery
March 7, 2008
Hi Everyone,
Our Casting for Recovery Indiana team is now recruiting applicants for the 2008 CFR Indiana retreat. Your help is definitely needed to help us reach our goal of making sure every woman in Indiana hears of this wonderful program and has an opportunity to apply for a retreat. Attached is the flier that could be posted on a bulletin board, and an application. Also, women may apply on-line at www.castingforrecovery.org . This retreat is for Indiana women. There are other retreats across the country so if you have friends or family out-of-state, please have them check the website for a retreat in their state.
Please help us spread the word about this unique weekend of fun, fellowship, and wellness.
Also, just in case you are getting spring fever (yes, spring is coming) Allisonville Nursery is hosting a ”Healthy Living Day” April 12th. They have generously given us a table to tell women about CFR and take applications for this year’s retreat. Please stop by and see us!
Sincerely,
Barb Simpson

MORE ABOUT CASTING FOR RECOVERY:
Casting for Recovery is a national, non-profit support and educational program for breast cancer survivors. CFR provides weekend fly-fishing retreats at locations around the United States for women who have or have had breast cancer at no cost to our participants. We provide an opportunity for women whose lives have been profoundly affected by breast cancer to gather in a beautiful, natural setting, meet new friends and have fun. The 2 ½ day weekend retreat incorporates counseling, educational services and learning the sport of fly-fishing, a “sport for life”, to promote mental and physical healing. As many have said, it’s not about the fishing; it’s about forming new friendships and connecting with others.
Since the CFR program originated in 1996, over 160 retreats have been held, serving more than 2,000 breast cancer survivors. Last year, 500 women attended one of our 35 programs and nearly the same number of women was put on our waiting list. Retreats have been held across the United States in 23 states including Indiana. Our Indiana CFR program began in 2005 and this year we will hold our fourth retreat for Indiana women who are breast cancer survivors on September 12-14, at Wooded Glen Retreat and Conference Center in Henryville, Indiana. Our goal is to continue the CFR program in Indiana and to expand our program to two retreats a year.
Having local retreats gives women the opportunity to continue the supportive relationships they form at the retreat, and enjoy the out-of-doors long after the retreat has ended. Our focus as a support group is on wellness and empowerment, while fly-fishing is a therapeutic sport providing both mental and physical benefits. The CFR program is appropriate for women of all ages and in all stages of treatment and recovery.

March 5th Surgical Demonstration at Capitol
March 4, 2008Who Is Behind That Mask?
Surgical Technologists To Demonstrate Surgery At Capitol
Indianapolis, IN, March 3, 2008 – On Wednesday, March 5th, The Indiana State Assembly of The Association of Surgical Technologists will demonstrate a complete total knee surgical procedure in the Capitol, in an effort to demonstrate the crucial role played by all members of the operative team, particularly the role played by the Certified Surgical Technologist. The mock surgery, to be demonstrated at the Indiana State House, is an effort to educate the public as well as lawmakers regarding the importance of classroom and clinical training for everyone that works in the operating room. Surgical technologists are currently the only professionals in Indiana operating rooms not required by law to have any particular training or further credentialing as prerequisite to being hired in Indiana. The surgical demonstration will take place on Wednesday, March 5th, beginning at 10:00am on the third floor/south end of the Indiana State House.
In response to questions about the need for education and training for these individuals, Dana Fields, CST, Vice President of the Indiana State Assembly of AST states, “Today, in operating rooms throughout our state, there are literally hundreds of surgeries being performed. Perhaps, you or one of your loved ones has had surgery recently. With recent outbreaks of the flu, the increase in the number of individuals contracting Hepatitis B and C, and hospital acquired infections; it is imperative that our health care providers are properly trained. We expect that our physician will be one of the medical staff in the operating room. But, do you know all of the people behind the masks? How can you be certain everyone in that room is educated, skilled, and qualified to perform surgery?”
Along with physicians, anesthesiologists, and nurses, surgical technologists fill an important role in the operating room. As defined by the U.S. Department of Labor, surgical technologists assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses. The surgical technologist’s primary responsibilities involve preparing the operating room and the instruments, equipment and supplies that will be needed; positioning and preparing the patient for surgery; and passing instruments, sponges and sutures to the surgeon. The surgical technologist is the surgical team’s expert on sterility and aseptic technique, necessary to preventing contamination of the surgical site and surgical infections, and surgical technologists must be constantly vigilant for any break in technique that could endanger the sterile field so vital to the successful outcome of the operation. Surgical technologists may also serve in other roles on the surgical team.
On April 23, 2007, Governor Mitch Daniels signed into law a title protection bill for Certified Surgical Technologists in Indiana. The law made it a misdemeanor for any individual to use the credential (CST) unless he/she has passed the national certification exam. The passage of this law is the first step to establish the surgical technology profession’s next goal: Achieving graduation from an accredited program in surgical technology and holding and maintaining the CST credential as a prerequisite to employment. The Indiana State Assembly of the Association of Surgical Technologists is now pursuing legislation that would make graduation from an accredited program in surgical technology and holding and maintaining the Certified Surgical Technologist Credential mandatory in Indiana.
